Death of runner and role model leaves void at Milwaukee YMCA

Bicycle Doctor hosts an evening of awe, plus joining the driftless
I'm a bit embarassed to admit that I had never heard of the cyclist and coach John Howard until a message about his appearance at the Bicycle Doctor landed in my inbox this week.
Kemboi, Moody Early Shamrock Favorites
John Kemboi, a young Kenyan with great speed and grit at the middle distances, is likely to win the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle on Sunday but in rain, snow and wind, anything could happen. We'll just have to see how the weather turns out. According to my good friend Jeremy Borling, who has a good sense of who's who and what's what with this big 8K, others to watch include steeplechaser Steve Slattery, 13.39 5K runner Ryan Bak, 2:18 marathoner Matt Hooley, Wisconsinite Ryan Miessen, who was second last year, Tyler Sigl, Willy Kaul and local standout Greg Costello. Tera Moody, a local who now lives in Colorado, made her name with a fifth-place finish in the U.S. women's marathon trials in Boston for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Others in the hunt will be Sara Slattery , Casey Owens, who was third last year, Erin Moeller, who has run a 2:38 marathon, and local star Claudia Becque. I have to admit I've been a Tera Moody fan since she showed up at our first 4 on the 4th race in Elmhurst and won easily back in 2005. There surely are others who are not mentioned who will compete well and maybe win. Here's to everyone having a safe race in what could be soggy conditions.
Weather Looks Frightful for Shamrock, March Madness
The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle, along with the March Madness Half-Marathon in Cary, face some ugly weather potental on Sunday morning. If we get the rain and snow, which could possibly accumulate, it will be two years in a row that the Shamrock Shuffle has not been a rite of spring but a case of winter survival. As a water station volunteer last year, I nearly froze. The racers who showed up looked cold and were dodging snow-covered pot holes as they went by, but at least they were staying warm while they were running! For March Madness, crazy weather is more the norm than sunny days with no cold or wind on those 13.1 miles of hills, but there have been a few nice exceptions. All I can say is dress accordingly and run carefully, no matter which race you are in. This is Chicago, and in March anything can happen!

Dozens and possibly hundreds of those familiar work-place sessions on nutrition, stress management and healthy lifestyles has paid off in a silver medal for Milwaukee, and official designation as a Well City USA.
